Eclecticism

(XIXth century, 1830-1890.) To some extent eclecticism has always been an inevitable consequence of communication and interpenetration of different cultures. Everything that was comfortable and beautiful in the interiors of past styles was becoming fashionable. Many critics accused the eclectic art of excessive congestion and bad taste, of lack of individuality. But still this style had its specific features: flexible and plastic shapes, softness and comfort of furniture, an abundance of textiles, a lot of decorative elements, which could be from different parts the world, reminding the cultures of different countries.
